THE fast improving Lewis Meason, from Chelmsford Amateur Boxing Club, travelled to Cambridgeshire to box the rated Dean Whale from Trumpington ABC.

Lewis started sharply with a high guard catching his opponent with great one-two combinations.

The second and third round saw Lewis move perfectly around the ring pushing his opponent back throughout.

Whale was a willing opponent but had met his match in Meason. The end of the contest saw spectators stand with approval witnessing a very classy display of boxing. The referee raised Lewis’s arm in victory by a unanimous decision.

Chelmsford’s head coach Danny Thompson was not surprised by Meason’s performance.

He said: “Lewis has been training very hard. “We have our own show on Saturday, February 2, at the New Marconi Club, in Beehive Lane, so Lewis and all the boxers have been pushing themselves in the gym.

“We have great trainers who have been working Monday, Wednesday and Sundays getting the lads and ladies in shape for the show.”

There will also be two special bouts, including a heavyweight contest of three three-minute rounds.

As well as the young boxers, the club has its first female member boxing in the claret colours of Chelmsford – local prison officer Jenny Davis.

Jenny said: “I’m very nervous but have been training very hard and had special sparring planned on Sunday with a girl travelling from Norwich to help me.

“Unfortunately she didn’t make it so, instead, I worked twice as hard in the gym.

“My opponent – Sue Ward from Barnstable – will be travelling from Leeds University. She apparently fancies her chances. We’ll see!”

Chelmsford ABC’s current initiative is encouraging female boxers into the club to take up the sport, particularly in light of the successes in the Olympic Games. A number have already taken up the challenge and are in training.

There will be boxers competing from Westree, Guildford, Norwich, Sheerness, Barking and Harwich, to name a few.

Anyone wanting to reserve seats for the New Marconi Club Show, on Saturday, February 2, should call 07789 225501 to reserve seats or pay on the door.

Doors open at 7pm with approximately 15 bouts – admission costs adults £10, pensioners and under-12s £5.

Club secretary Ray Cooper said: “The club is receiving many calls from people wanting to join our club at Harway House, Rectory Lane. Any beginners should visit the club between 10am and noon on a Sunday morning.”
