Chelmsford VC travelled to Brentwood last weekend hoping to extend their lead in Division 3. In set one, Chelmsford used Kirsty Green and Amanda Barnes to set, with Capt Ken Edwards and Matt Brookes as middle attack and Luke Jones and Narayan Koimuttam as outside attackers. Chelmsford immediately raced to a 5-0 lead thanks to strong serving from Koimuttam. Brentwood were finding it hard to penetrate the Chelmsford defence, Capt Edwards showing the way with two excellent stuff blocks. Chelmsford found point easy to win and romped away with the set 25-8.

In set two, Chelmsford coach Ian Reeve made three changes introducing himself, Steve Peacock and Kunjan Jasani to the starting six. The changes were a coaches dream, as the quality of the Chelmsford side was maintained and they powered their way through to take the set comfortably 25-9.

And so to set three, and a return to the first set line-up for Chelmsford. A very spirited reply from Brentwood saw them trade points up to 9-9 forcing Coach Reeve to call a time out. This settled his side and enabled players to cut down on errors and ensure that the block remained solid. With instant effect, Chelmsford won three consecutive points forcing opposition Coach Rees Warren to now call a time out. At 12-11, coach Reeve made three substitutions returning to the second set line up. Some brilliant setting from Green and breathtaking recovery passes from Barnes enabled all Chelmsford attackers to hit clear winners, taking the set 25-18 and the match 3-0 After the match coach Ian Reeve praised his players, saying: “I am very proud of my team today.

“The team spirit was excellent throughout and also it was nice to see smiling faces on both sides of the net”

Setter Kirsty Green was voted MVP (most valued player) for the second match running for her all round contribution and setting accuracy. Chelmsford seconds remain top of the league.
