BEN Stephens believes the One-Day format changes now in place for the Shepherd Neame Essex League can suit Colchester and East Essex in their promotion quest.

The Castle Park outfit travel to play Belhus tomorrow in great form, having won their last three First XI division one games.

The league has now reverted to the 50-over-a-side format where teams have to make use of a minimum of five bowlers, with reduced bonus points on offer for losing teams.

And with Colchester boasting a host of talented bowlers in their side, the experienced Stephens believes they can use that to their advantage.

Stephens said: “We have sometimes six or seven bowlers available to us in a match and often, other teams don’t have that luxury.

“We also bat incredibly deeply, so that hopefully also gives us an advantage.”

Colchester head into their game at Belhus this weekend lying 29 points off the leaders Hutton, following an impressive run of form.

“We have some really good match winners in our squad,” said Stephens.

“It’s three wins in a row now and we’re feeling confident.

“We had a bit of a mishap at Orsett but that helped give us the kick up the bum that perhaps we needed.

“I don’t think we’re a division one team.

“We should get promoted if we do everything right.

“The boys had a bit of bad luck last year but it’s amazing what a year can do and they’ve grown up a lot in that time.”

Colchester take on a Belhus side who lie fourth in the table, with two wins to their name so far this season but only one defeat.

Stephens said: “They’re a tricky side to play and anyone can beat anyone on their day.

“They’re playing on their own ground and just like Castle Park is a big pitch and some teams get a bit over-awed, others rise to the occasion.

“We’re certainly not going to underestimate them.”

Colchester are set to welcome back Joe MacGregor and Josh Rymell tomorrow, after they missed last weekend’s victory over Woodford Wells.
