LITTLE Horkesley track cyclist David Le Grys claimed three medals at the European Masters Track Championships, in France.

Competing for Great Britain, the 62-year-old won gold and two silver medal at the event staged in Roubaix.

Le Grys, who won the National Masters 500m time trial in July was victorious in the team sprint, riding with Adey Dent and Steve Cronshaw.

They beat a much younger French team in the final, triumphing by half a second.

Le Grys started as man one, meaning he had to compete in the first leg - one lap of a 250 metres track - for his team.

The team race is like a relay without a baton, with each rider completing a lap and swinging off until last rider completes the race.

In the 500m time trial, Le Grys finished second to fellow British rider Cronshaw to secure a one-two for the Brits.

French rider Jean Pierre Guinebert was third.

Le Grys’s time was slower than his effort in winning the British Nationals back in July, due to a back injury.

In the sprint event, the 2013 World Masters sprint champion qualified second and comfortably won his first and second rounds.

But his semi-final preparations the following day were disrupted when the running order of the programme was changed.

Organisers moved the 60-64 age group sprint forward two hours, leaving Le Grys under-prepared.

Le Grys said: "Basically I had no warm up.

"When I arrived at the stadium at what I thought was two hours before my semi-final, I was horrified that the racing had already started and my event was up in 15 minutes."

The semi-final and final in the sprint event are run over the best of three rides.

Le Grys struggled to win his first ride against Polish rider Kazimiez Golonka but comfortably won the second match half an hour later, after getting a proper warm-up.

He met Cronshaw in the final and lost 2-0, securing a silver medal.

Le Grys added: "Steve rode well but it would have been closer if my back injury was not playing me up."

Le Grys now has less than three weeks to recover from his back injury before the World Championships take place in Los Angeles, United States next month.
