Macauley Bonne has left Colchester United and signed for National League new boys Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old, who spent several years in the U's academy after joining them as a youngster from Ipswich Town, has joined the O's on a two-year deal.

Bonne made his Colchester debut as a 17-year-old at Shrewsbury Town in October 2013.

And the Zimbabwe international scored his first goal for the first team on his 18th birthday in the U's win over Peterbrough United.

Bonne struggled for starts under boss John McGreal last season and spent time on loan in the National League with both Lincoln City and Woking.

In total, Bonne made 82 appearances for the U's, scoring 16 goals.

Ironically, Bonne's final goal for the U's came in their 3-1 win at Orient, in their penultimate game of last season.

Bonne's departure increases speculation that Colchester are set to add to their attacking options, ahead of the big League Two kick-off on August 5.

Meanwhile, George Elokobi has joined Bonne at Leyton Orient after also signing a two-year deal at Brisbane Road.

Elokobi left Colchester earlier this month after a two-year second spell after failing to agree terms on a new contract.
