FORMER junior captain Louis Freeman finished strongly to win Stoke by Nayland’s Club Championship.

With the field reduced on the second day of the competition, the 25-year-old jumped from fifth place to win the Championship with a score of 70.

Freeman, whose previous best finish in the competition was eighth, won by two shots from runner-up Alex Royce.

He has been a member of Stoke by Nayland GC since he was 13 and worked at the club, before joining Cobra Puma.

Stoke by Nayland's Club Championship was contested on consecutive days over the club’s two courses, Gainsborough and Constable, with a cut in the field after day one.

On day one, 83 players took to the Gainsborough Course and after the cut, a total of 60 players played the Constable Course on the day two.

At the half way stage Scott Brace, with a gross 72, led the field with Royce and Alex English one shot back.

The AJB Cup was won by Alex Royce.

Mid Week Medal (Gainsborough) division one: 1st Max Smith 68-3 = 65; 2nd Harry Hills 72-5 = 67; 3rd Andrew Searles 83-15 = 68.

Division two: 1st Guy Holland 91-23 = 68; 2nd John Sandford 94 – 20 = 74; 3rd Peter Hele 96 – 19 = 77.

Horse and Hound was the theme as Anne Hemmings held her Captain’s Day at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club.

The ladies played an 18-hole golf competition, with teams of four playing a reverse waltz on the front nine.

On the back nine stableford, the yellow ball counted for double points.

More than £200 was raised for the Suffolk MIND charity.

Stoke by Nayland Ladies played their weekend stableford on the Constable Course, with some great golf on show.

Jo Little won with 40 points, three points ahead of runner-up Margaret Bentley (37 points).
