AN amazing points total helped Dean Rainbird and Alan Smith earn the right to represent Playgolf Colchester in the Mullis Trophy county qualifier.

The duo will take part in the qualifier in October, after amassing an unassailable 46 points to win the competition.

The competition was played in superb course conditions with receptive and quick, true greens.

The better-ball pairs format with 90 per cent handicap allowance saw the pair click on the day to amass an amazing, unassailable 46 points to win the competition.

They put their success down to a superb front-nine by Smith (18) who was one under gross through eight holes before Rainbird came through to take the pair over the line.

Early starters Adrian Binns and Alex Crawford were clubhouse leaders for a long time with 45 points, a total they must have thought was enough to win.

The same could be said for Matt Barnett and Rob Cornish, who carded 44 points to finish third on countback with a birdie on 18 to leave Adam Eaton and Jack Blackman out in fourth place.

A large field of Playgolf Colchester Seniors played for the Huggin’s Trophy with bunkers designated as GUR (Ground Under Repair) after heavy overnight rain.

Les Hearsey won on countback, earning a handicap to 27 after seeing off Jeremy Dalton, with both players finishing on 39 points.

Jeff Coles was third on 37 points.

Sleeve of balls winners, for birdies on the par threes went to Bruce Poole, Derek Mannister and Will Elder.

A large field of Playgolf Colchester ladies took to the course to contest their May Medal.

Linda Dundon (32) won division one with an impressive nett 69, closely followed by runner-up Lucy Sadler (18) with her card of nett 70.

Judith Peeling (20) finished third, with a nett 71.

Pauline Jordan (34) was the clear winner in division two with an excellent nett 70, followed by Jennie Boyden (36) with a nett 73 and third-placed Janet Blackmore (36) (nett 77).
