Braintree Town manager Hakan Hayrettin was in no mood to pull his punches in his assessment of an under-par display from his team against Woking.

The Iron boss admitted that his team were out-played as they remained looking over their shoulders at the Vanarama National League's relegation fight and just six points clear of the drop zone with seven games left to play.

Braintree took the lead through a wonder goal from Sam Corne - his third in the last two games - but Woking hit straight back with two quick-fire strikes of their own and dominated the action to wrap up a 3-1 win as the Iron were distinctly off colour.

And Hayrettin was quick to admit that his team were second-best.

He said: “We weren’t good enough and they were just better than us on the day.

“They deserved to win.

“It was just individuals not stepping up to the plate and they were better than us.

“We have a way of playing but it didn’t work.

“Their first goal typified that as we have given away a free-kick that we didn’t defend well.

“The ball came in and we got punished, but the second goal was even worse as we let their centre forward turn and run at us.

“It was a great strike and take nothing away from him, but I think we could have stopped it and then the third goal, we just got caught out.

“There were a lot of our players who were off it.

“You can afford to carry one or two, but if you carry more than one or two then you will struggle and we carried more in this one.

“I have won this league as a player and as a coach and you have to be consistent in the way that you do things.

“If you are inconsistent then you will come unstuck and we were inconsistent from Saturday to Tuesday.

“We didn’t have the same sort of game or time management and didn’t do the right things in the right areas, whereas against Southport (on Saturday), we were a bit higher.

“We didn’t hold the ball up top once against Woking.

“We huffed and puffed in certain areas but it was nowhere near what we are used to and we need to put it right now."
