BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT boss James Webster insists reaching the play-offs is still his number one goal this season.

The R's moved joint-top of Ryman League division north after a 5-0 thumping of Ware at North Road on Tuesday night.

It put them level on points with leaders MALDON AND TIPTREE and they also have the bonus of a game in hand on the Jammers.

However, Webster is keeping his feet firmly on the ground and believes there is still plenty of mileage in this season's promotion race.

“It’s exciting, but we’re not talking about winning the league," said the Regent boss, whose side, ironically, face a swift reunion with Ware at Wodson Park tomorrow.

"Honestly, that was never the aim.

“Our goal was always to get in the play-offs and if we finish fifth, it’ll still be a great season.

“There are still a lot of points to play for and we’ve got some tough games to come.

“We’ll keep plugging away and see what happens.

“This squad is the best I’ve ever had, though, and I do feel we’ve got what we need in the dressing room to have a good crack at the play-offs.

“It feels like we’re all in it together and there’s great camaraderie within the group.

“I can’t sing their praises highly enough."

Webster will be more than happy if his side can replicate their midweek performance in the return match against Ware.

He shuffled his pack in midweek, leaving out the likes of Phil Kelly, Jake Turner, Josh Gould and Jake Gould.

All four were named on a strong-looking substitutes' bench.

“I wanted to change things around, with tomorrow in mind, and keep things fresh," he said.

“And the lads put in a fantastic performance.

“I was really happy and thought we controlled the game from the start.

“We took our chances, kept a clean sheet and pretty much ticked all the boxes.

“Everything went to plan."

Elsewhere tomorrow, leaders Maldon are away to mid-table Bury Town.

The Jammers are top courtesy of a superior goal difference and another victory tomorrow would make it three in a row and eight wins from ten matches.

Neighbours HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS had also been in great form prior to last weekend's 2-1 defeat at home to VCD Athletic.

They had only lost one of their previous seven matches and Jody Brown's men will be hoping for another positive performance from tomorrow's tough match at home to third-placed AFC Hornchurch.
