A DRAMATIC play-off was needed to decide Playgolf Colchester's Senior Masters competition.

Former captain Peter Evans prevailed over Michael Johnson after the pair tied on 214 strokes each in the event, played over three days with a large and competitive field.

The format is full handicap medal, with two rounds of qualifying matches.

The field is then split out to non-qualifiers and qualifiers, who progress to play in the two respective competitions.

The top 18 players (and ties) then qualify to compete for the Masters Green Jacket, which is then presented to the winner at the formal dinner the following evening.

Evans (25) had a nett score of 68+74+72=214 matching Johnson's (23) total score of 72+73+69=214, resulting in a play-off.

Having been pre-decided to play the first five holes until there was a winner, the contest was soon decided when Johnson's second shot hid itself behind a large tree.

It took him two shots to get it out and the contest was over, as Evans' par on the par five gave him the victory.

Ex-captain Trevor Cocksedge (14) was third with his score of 72+69+77=218.

The non-qualifiers shield was won by Alan Barret with a fine score of 38.

Alan Cole was runner-up spot on countback from Adrian Beckingsale, after both carded 34 points.

This year's Green Jacket was contested by some unexpected competitors, with some of the more senior-seniors with higher handicaps being in the mix in the final round.

Until this year no player with a handicap over 14 had won the competition but there was keen interest at hole 18 as the leaders ended their rounds, with scores close.

Evans, who has always been a great inspiration to the younger seniors, eventually prevailed and is a deserving winner.

The club have thanked the green staff for preparing a superb course to play on and the seniors captain Alan Cole for organising a fantastic golf competition and presentation.

There was a large turnout for Playgolf Colchester's Ladies Withycombe Cup, played in perfect conditions.

Some excellent scores were returned in this strokeplay format competition.

Lucy Sadler took victory carding a fantastic nett 70, two under the Competition Scratch Score.

Janet Blackmore was three shots off the pace with a very respectable one over par nett 73 to finish second.

A further shot adrift on nett 74, Catherine Le Tue and Shirley Birkin battled it out for third place with the countback going in Le Tue’s favour.
