Drey Wright admitted the joy of scoring his first Colchester United goal for nearly two years was diminished by their 2-1 home loss against Accrington Stanley.

The U’s winger found the net with a wonderful long-range effort in the opening minutes to give his side the lead at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

But Stanley hit back in the second half to score twice and claim all three points, leaving winger Wright with bittersweet emotions.

Wright said: “I’m pleased to get my first goal of the season but I’d be a lot happier had we won.

“I think it was probably the most frustrating match we’ve had, this season, with the manner of the goals that we conceded and how the goal panned out.

“We’re getting in good areas and situations but at the minute, it’s not really coming for us.

“We’ll work on it and hopefully, we can go on and get the second goal.”

Wright said he felt he had been edging closer to breaking his scoring duck for Colchester this season.

And the 21-year-old revealed his previous knowledge of training with former U’s goalkeeper Elliott Parish, who is now with Accrington, played a part in his thinking.

“I picked up a bit of space and it opened up so I thought “why not,” said Wright, whose last Colchester goal came against Gillingham in the Football League Trophy in October 2014.

“I know Elliott Parish from last year from training and I know that he can’t really get down into the corners!

“Over the last few games, that goal had been getting ever closer.

“I’ve been saying to friends and family that the goal was coming and I’m happy that it’s come but I’d have preferred three points.”

Wright has started every Colchester league game so far this season and the former U’s youth-team player admits he is enjoying playing regularly, having been hampered by injury problems over recent seasons.

He added: “After a long time out, I was fit last year but not really 100 per cent so it’s been a good three years now.

“It’s good to be back in and hopefully I can continue and stay there for the remainder of the season.

“It’s just about keeping fit and hopefully, putting in good performances and carry that on.”
