CLACTON Golf Club's youngsters were pipped in the final of the Essex Golf Union Youth Shield.

They were defeated by Chelmsford, in the final at Bentley Golf Club, near Brentwood.

In match one, Clacton’s Ben Rendell (3.7) lost 8&6 to Chelmsford’s Michael Gilbert (+1).

Katy Yates (3.9), playing golf to a standard that proves her potential, won 2&1 against Arron Edwards-Hill (0.1), while Max Smith (4.5) lost one-down against Ryan Tattan (1.4).

Junior captain Riley Faulkner (5.3) lost 6&5 against Ben Humphrey (3.7) and Josh Bethell (7.2) fought back to win two-up against Oscar Yoemans (4.2).

After the match, Faulkner thanked Chelmsford for playing their part in a great final and congratulated them on their first win in this county competition.

Faulkner also thanked the many supporters from both clubs for watching and supporting the teams in a very sporting manner.

Essex County Golf Union president-elect Roger Warmsley presented medals to Clacton and then to the winning Chelmsford team.

Meanwhile, Clacton's men played in the prestigious Golf Leaf Portnoi Cup and the winner was Robert Meekings, with 45 points.

In second place was Raymond Justice, with 41 points, and in third was Leslie Hall, with 39.

Clacton's men played their September Midweek Medal and the winner was James Moor, with 89-18-71, on countback from Clive Bedding, with 82-11-71.

In third was Ben Griggs, with 87-14-73.

Clacton hosted their annual match for past and present lady captains.

Denise Pink, last year's winner, reclaimed the trophy with a magnificent 35 points.

Clacton's juniors played their Hedley Shield match.

The winner was Henry Goodwin, returning a solid 37 points, on countback from second-placed Harvey Bell.

In third place was George Fuller, with 35.

Clacton's ladies played their September Medal and the winner was Jacqueline Bright, returning a score of 100-28-72.

In second was Julia Hewett, with 104-31-73, on countback from Diana Kedge (94-21-73).

In the ladies' nine-hole nett strokplay competition, the winner was Sheila Coleman, with 31.

In second was Liz McGregor, with 49, and in third was Lyn Willson, with 54.
