COLCHESTER Gladiators recorded their first win of the season with a hard-fought 12-6 win over the Hertfordshire Cheetahs.

The Mill Road-based club edged past the Cheetahs in a game that was decided with an outstanding defensive performance that included three interceptions and two sacks, and a goal line stand late in the game.

The Gladiators led 12-6 but on fourth down punter Nathan Brown took a high snap and landed awkwardly, fracturing his ankle as he landed.

Unable to kick the ball away, the ball was turned over to the Cheetahs just six yards out.

A short run on first down took the ball to the four before Dan Jones tackled the running back for a big loss of five yards, bringing up third down.

An incomplete pass brought up fourth down, possibly the visitors' final chance to tie the game.

A short pass into the end zone was broken up by Chris Jackson to return the ball to Colchester.

The Gladiators could not move the ball however and were forced to punt, giving Herts another chance to score, likely to be with a short field.

Tom Clarke stepped in to the punter's role but the Herts returner made a critical mistake, allowing the ball to touch his leg, making the ball live.

Speedster receiver Andi Xheka was first to the ball and dived on it to claim possession inside Cheetah territory.

The Gladiators were then able to run out the clock to secure the win.

Head coach Karl Bourke said: “If you work hard and play as a team, you get your rewards.

"We showed great spirit again today and never gave in, making plays when we needed to.

"We can take great confidence from the game as we look forward to another tough encounter, against old rivals, Sussex Thunder.”

The Gladiators host the Thunder on Sunday at Colchester Rugby Club, kick-off 2.30pm - admission is free.
