STOKE by Nayland Golf Club's junior golfers have made a winning start in the Essex Golf Union Inter-Club Youth Shield.

Their team of five juniors ran out 3-2 winners against Five Lakes Golf Club.

The team are in a zoned Scratch League which also includes Benton Hall, Playgolf, Clacton and Colchester.

Stoke by Nayland's team of five juniors played individual matchplay and were led out by James Mack.

The Westwood School pupil put the first point on the board with a 7&5 win.

And a second point followed courtesy of Alex English.

But Five Lakes pulled one back with Joe Hart beating Stoke junior captain Sam Nixon and Tom Vass recording a win against Henry Day.

However the in-form Matt Thompson secured Stoke by Nayland's victory with a good win, in the final match.

Stoke now look forward to their next match which is at Colchester.
