COLCHESTER Golf Club’s ladies saw off Newton Green in the opening round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.
They triumphed 3½-1½ overall in their inter-club match, contested at Colchester’s Braiswick course.
Nicola Stewart, playing off 16, bagged Colchester an early win after beating Janet Sparks (21) 7&6.
But Newton Green evened things up when Rebecca Evans (18) pipped Philippa Deman (7) one up, on the last.
Heather Dennis (17) halved her match against Leighan Wordly (20), to keep the scores level.
But the final two matches put the tie firmly into Colchester’s hands.
Judith Robertson beat Liz Ward (21) 4&3, while Louisa Storey (6) got the better of Diane Cunningham (13) 5&4.
Cherie Clark (21) won Colchester ladies’ 14-hole stableford, with 27 points.
Runner-up was Pat Kettle (17) on 26 points, two points ahead of third-placed Jane Kerr (36) and Sara Cock (29) who was fourth with 23 points.
