IT was a battle of the heavyweights in division one of the Clacton and District League, with six of the leading players involved in a top-of-the-table clash between Nomads Panthers and Windsor Condors.

However, it was the lightest, slightest and youngest of them, 15-year old Sam Hume, who produced the champion performance.

He notched up an impressive treble with fine victories over Greg Green, Martin Hogg and the previously-unbeaten Colin Stallwood, therefore avenging his defeat in the 2015 men’s singles Closed Championships.

James Denyer weighed in with two excellent wins over Stallwood and Hogg but could not get the better of Green, the Condors’ most successful player on the night, who took two.

With Green and Stallwood taking the doubles for the Condors against Hume and Colin Webber, the match appropriately ended all-square.

Elsewhere, Windsor Eagles defeated Walton B 10-0, with the closest match seeing Mark Smith beat Colin Dearman 16-14 in the decider.

Windsor Hawks recorded a comfortable 9-1 victory over a Nomads Lions team forced to field two reserves, while it was 8-2 for Walton C against Windsor Kestrels.

Jason Gale, producing his best form of the season, and Derek Willis were both undefeated.

In division two, Windsor Owls were comfortable 9-1 victors over a Nomads Jaguars side hampered by an injury to Cris Edwards.

The doubles produced the tensest match, with Tricia Salter and Mark Salter scraping past Andrew North and Kevin Hume 11-9 in the fifth.

Trebles from John Marshall and Daryl Lott were the backbone of Nomads Tigers’ 8-2 success against Windsor Magpies, while Paul Hewitt was Lawford’s unbeaten hero as the out-of-towners defeated Windsor Harriers 6-4. The all-Brotherhood clash saw the I side produce a good all-round team performance to beat the H side 7-3.

Maurice Hardy took three, Mark Beckham two and Jonathan Found one.

Nomads Bobcats eased their relegation worries with a surprise 9-1 victory over Windsor Buzzards.

Tony Robinson and Doug Green both took trebles and Tony Beezer won twice.

In division three, Nomads Pumas beat Nomads Wildcats 6-4 for a second time this season.

Eric Lemke recorded a hat-trick for the winners, while there were two each for Brian Friday and Andrew Cawley for the losers.

Windsor Penguins got back to winning ways with a 6-4 success against Nomads Cougars, with Harry Barlow, Jackie Bunce and Alan Charman all winning two.

Mike Hillier stayed unbeaten for the Cougars and shared a doubles win with Zoe Strange.

Woody Fitzpatrick took his maximum for the Ospreys but Nomads Ocelots took the match 6-4.

Tom Collins and Scott Campbell each won two and Dave Wright one.

Nomads Lynx and Windsor Kites fought out an honourable draw.

For the Lynx, Cameron Cini and Liam Harris each took two and Barbara Rogers one.

Chris Simson took three for the Kites and Mick Simson one, with the pair combining to take the doubles.
