Tony Humes says he will continue to strive to bring success to Colchester United after being nominated for the League One Manager of the Month award.

The U’s boss has been shortlisted for the September prize, after leading his resurgent side to four successive wins and 13 points out of a possible 15, last month.

Bury boss David Flitcroft, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink of Burton Albion and Southend United manager Phil Brown have also been shortlisted for the award.

The winner will be announced tomorrow but whatever the outcome, boss Humes says his main aim is to ensure Colchester keep moving onwards and upwards.

Humes said: “We’re striving to move forward and don’t want to fail - we want to be successful in what we do.

“You try to enjoy every minute because how often do you get an opportunity to do a job like this?

“But it’s obviously a lot easier and better to do that when you’re winning games.

“It’s no less stressful when you’re winning, though and you’re still willing the players to perform as well as they can for the football club.

“The players know the style of play and how we want to play and they’re carrying out.

“They’ve become a hard team to play against, with the ball and getting better without it too.”

Colchester goalkeeper Jamie Jones has been nominated for the League One Player of the Month award for September.

The U’s shot-stopper has been in fine form for the club and saved two penalties against Gillingham and Sheffield United, last month.

Jones also helped Colchester keep a clean sheet in their final game of last month, the 2-0 win over Bradford City.

The 26-year-old former Leyton Orient keeper has tasted defeat only once since joining the U’s on loan from Championship side Preston North End, last month.

Prior to joining Colchester, he had not played competitively since turning out for Rochdale on loan last April and Jones says he is enjoying playing again.

He said: “I love being out there between the white lines - that’s what everybody wants to do.

“You don’t want to sit on the bench or on the stands and I want to be out there keeping clean sheets.

“I worked hard in training at Preston and played a lot of games for them in pre-season.

“I came to Colchester in top fitness and long may it continue.”
