Colchester Rovers battled it out in VC Revolution Cycling Club’s second annual cyclocross event at Hilly Fields.

Rovers’ James Morrison was first under-eight boy, with William Smith finishing third.

Daisy Emerson won the under-ten girls’ race, ahead of second-placed Lizzie Wellsted.

Bradley Taylor was third in the under-ten boys’ event.

Jack Emerson was third in the under-12 boys’ race while Jodie Taylor won the under-12 girls’ race, finishing sixth overall.

Zoe Swainston finished third in the girls’ category.

In the under-16 race, Cameron Hurst was second while Dan Hall was first Rovers’ rider home in the under-14 category.

Peter Hall was the highest-placed Rovers rider in the Veteran 50+ race after finishing 19th, with Laura Mansel-Thomas seventh in the female veterans.

The Veteran 40-49 race saw a battle between Colchester’s Amis Velo RT duo Ben Paton and Mark Wellsted.

Paton eventually won by a single second to finish ninth overall, closely followed by Rovers’ Andy Hurst in 13th.

In the Senior/Junior race, James Jackson claimed the top Rovers result with 28th.

The Colchester Rovers Memorial Shield 25-mile time trial attracted the smallest entry in its 69-year history.

But it arguably the best ever podium battle – a win by just 18 seconds and a tie for second place.

Chris Hamblion won the scratch competition in one hour two minutes 34 seconds with Giles Askham and Nick Webber just behind, tied on 1h 2m 52s.

The Memorial Shield, which is primarily a handicap event, saw 2004 winner Nick Webber go fastest in the category.

Rovers were well represented in the Leo 30 combined East Anglian VTTA and ECCA Championship 30-mile TT, held on the new E2/30c course.

Phil Jarvis (1h 6m 12s), Rick Laws (1h 7m 1s) and Doug Williams (1h 16m 30s) all competed.

The Senior Veterans 30 mile team secured a new club record, improved further when Len Benton finished in 1h 10m 6s.

Benton, along with Jarvis and Laws, smashed the previous club record set in 2011 by more than 15 minutes.

Rovers’ Jamil Shehadeh continued his strong road season with an eighth-place finish in round 19 of the SERRL crits in Gravesend.

It brought Shehadeh two points closer to his target of securing his third category race licence.
