FORTY competitors turned out in glorious sunshine for the veterans’ Guest Day at Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club.

The course was in superb condition and there was a win for Charlie Dennis and Frinton’s Keith Banks.

Result: 1 B C Dennis and K Banks 40 points, 2 R Pryce and D Cordel 39, 3 B Wheatley and B Clarke 38 (on countback). Best front nine: R Keen and J McAleavy 21 points (on countback). Best back nine: Richardson and P McKentey 20 points. Nearest the pin: Guest: Colin Firmin. Nearest the pin: Host: Graham Upson. Booby prize: A Boddy and B Hymas.

Meanwhile, ten teams entered the captain’s charity competition, on Friday.

There was a shotgun start, with the best three scores on each hole to count for each team.

The scores were close, but the eventual winners, with a total of 121 points, were The Galley, who were captained by Gavin Bennett and assisted by his team of Arfa Bennett, Jem Mather and Ron Taylor.

Feuillus Fencing, whose team consisted of Danny Turner, Kieran Loughlan, Phil Murray and Dave Lofts, won the yellow ball competition with 36 points.

Nearest the pin was Loughlan, whose tee shot on the seventh tee came to rest nine foot from the pin.

The longest drive on the eighth hole was won by Adrian Stuart, who competed for Haltermann Carless.
