England C international Alex Woodyard may be the next player to follow new manager Danny Cowley from Concord Rangers to Braintree Town.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who made his second Three Lions appearance against the Republic of Ireland Under-21s earlier this month, earned the Supporters’ Player-of-the-Year award after impressing under the managerial leadership of Cowley at Concord last year.

And the Iron boss hopes he may be joining defender Matt Fry in making the switch from Canvey to Cressing Road.

Woodyard has been invited to link up with the start of Braintree’s pre-season training today before he heads to Leyton Orient for a trial with the League Two club, but if that doesn’t work out, then Cowley said he could be signing for the Iron.

The Braintree boss said: “Alex was fantastic for us last year and we have known him a long time.

“We worked hard to get him to Concord last year and were really pleased to be able to pick him up after his time at Dartford.

“His form won him a much-deserved England C call-up and I know he had rave reviews from (England C manager) Paul Fairclough.

“He will come to us for the first few pre-season sessions before he goes to Leyton Orient for a trial period.

“If it doesn’t work out there then he will certainly open up opportunities for us."
