HARWICH and Dovercourt Hockey Club’s ladies have made a flying start to their Ipswich Summer League campaign.
In their first game against a strong Bury St Edmunds side, they picked youngsters Lucy Brown and Abi Henshaw and also fielded Nat Bass and Hannah Easton.
Together, they played some great hockey with the newcomers and youngsters fitting in well.
Harwich ran out 3-0 winners, with two goals for Rachel Griffin and one for skipper Sophie Southgate.
Next they played Felixstowe’s second team and fielded Abi Henshaw, Eve Garner and keeper Lucy Farnworth.
Without Griffin, Fran Speight played up front and they also welcomed back Fi Wynne.
Goals came at regular intervals as Felixstowe struggled with Harwich’s accurate passing game and, by half-time, they had opened up a five-goal lead, with two for Southgate.
Easton opened her account and there were further goals for Shirley Sanpson and Wynne.
Harwich were without Southgate for the second half as she had to attend the Suffolk Hockey AGM.
However, this did not stop her team attacking in the same manner.
Wynne added two superb individual efforts, Emma Joslin hit an unstoppable shot from a rebound and Speight scored two – the second on the half-volley from a Wynne cross.
The Harwich defence of Donna Garland, Tracey Eagle, Karen Nichols and Carolyn Rowland played so well that new keeper Farnworth was a spectator.
