COLCHESTER Indoor Bowls Club hosted an Essex President’s select team and won a close contest by 102 shots to 93.

The match was played over five rinks with each team winning twice and one game drawn.

On rink one, Colchester skip Denis Mold and his team of Jack Keys, Phill Baggarley and Geoff Miller took a few ends to get going, but never looked back after taking the lead on the sixth end and won 30-12.

Rink two saw Daniel Rodger playing alongside David McKillop, Bradley Mann and Matt Lace, and they made a flying start to lead 19-0 after seven ends.

In the next seven ends, the visitors managed just four shots and trailed 25-4 and Colchester eventually eased to a 34-10 victory.

Skip Geoff Hughes, Tony Gibbins, Wayne Jackson and Richard Hewitt were on rink three and took a shot on both of the first and last ends to tie a tight match in which the home side only went behind in for the first time on the 17th end. The final score was 18-18.

There was a 21-12 defeat for Colchester skip Kevin McDonald, Michael Moriarty, David Jones and Reg Stubbins on rink four.

The game was very close right up until the 15th end when the score was 11-9, but the home team won only one of the last six ends.

On rink five, home skip Derek Hunt, Roy Lang, David Elsdon and Joe Coppin started and finished badly with some scoreless ends in the middle and lost 32-8.

Colchester Indoor Bowls Club’s ladies took on the men in the annual St Valentine’s Day grudge match. The men triumphed 135-86.
