THE annual Daily Mail Foursomes competition is always a different challenge for the members of Playgolf Colchester.

Playing in pairs with a single ball, taking alternative shots is not the easiest of formats, but if you partner up well, it can be an enjoyable experience.

The team handicap was worked out by halving the combined total of both players.

The deadly duo of the week was the pairing of Mark Pidgeley and Matt Barnett (13) who carded the winning score of gross 81 (nett 68).

They combined well and complemented each other’s games, playing some excellent approach shots close to some tough pin positions.

Matt Gladman and Paul Addison (10.5) walked off admitting they had left more than enough shots out on the course to have won, but it was not to be with their gross 81 (nett 70.5).

The pair teamed up well and played some solid golf, including an excellent birdie putt, drilled in from 30 feet, on the par five second.

Third place needed countback to separate the pairings of Peter Quilty and Stephen Peeling (18) and Mick Hersant and Paul Connelly (20) after they recorded scores of nett 71.

Quilty and Peeling had a better back nine score to take the final podium place and complete the competition.

The seniors’ two clubs and a putter was a competitive affair with Paul Woods taking the honours with an outstanding 35 points.

Woods’ round highlights came in the form of a single birdie and a trio of pars on his way to winning by two points.

Countback was required to decide second place after Alan Burke and David Palmer both carded 32 points.

But Burke’s better back nine score edged Palmer into third place The ladies’ February Medal competition was played in favourable weather conditions attracting a large number of competitiors.

Liz Schultz played an excellent game, carding the Competition Scratch Score of nett 74 to win division one.

Gina Macmillan and Sue Patrick needed countback to separate them after recording scores of nett 78.

Macmillan snatched the runners-up place with a back nine 39 versus Patrick’s 41.

Shirley Birkin carded a nett 79 to win division two with an emphatic seven-shot margin over her closest rival, second-placed Lucy Sadler, on nett 86.

Jennie Boyden was third with a score of nett 90 to pip Maureen Dale out of a podium place by a single stroke.
