Chelmsford Cobras Women’s Ice Hockey team consolidated their position as division one south champions with another win over their nearest rivals, Basingstoke Bison Ladies, at Basingstoke.
The game was not without its problems as the lighting completely shut off after only 45 seconds.
After 15 minutes lighting was restored and the game continued. The lighting was reduced to half light three further times during the game, but the game continued.
The scoring was opened by Cobras’ Jennifer Bolton, who received the puck in front of her own net and skated the full length of the ice and put the puck into the Basingstoke net.
This early goal was just what the Cobras wanted and they continued to pressurise the Basingstoke defence until Gabrielle Gunn wrong footed the Basingstoke netminder and put the puck high into the net to make it 2-0 to the Cobras at the end of the first period.
The second period saw Basingstoke come out charged up and pressurised the Cobras net, but the defence held and Jess Bowman in the Cobras net made some fine saves, in spite of playing with a strained hamstring.
Cobras regained control and a third goal was scored by Tereza Plankova.
The second period ended with Cobras spending most of the time in the Basingstoke half and wondering why they were only three goals up.
The third period started much like the second, with Basingstoke attacking and the Cobras holding their breath every time Jess dropped the ice to make a save, hoping she would get up again.
Eventually Basingstoke scored with a shot from just inside the blue line which took a deflection and the puck went over Jess Bowman’s shoulder into the top of the net.
From the restart Cobras went on the offensive and kept Basingstoke in their half for most of the time.
Shortly before the end of the game Cobras playmaker, Charmaine Easton crashed into the Basingstoke net and had to be taken out of the game with a suspected collar bone injury.
Cobras continued their strong defensive work and kept had more shots on goal but without result.
The final score 3-1 to the Cobras who ended their league fixtures with impressive stats of: Played 14, won 13, lost 1, Goals for 83, against 13.
They will now go to the play offs at Sheffield at the end of May to gain entry to the premier league.
