SWAN publican Chris Ward got some return on his Ridley League sponsorship when his team won the Dominoes Cup at Felsted Chequers last week.
They made short work of Bocking rivals the Retreat to recapture the trophy they last won six years ago, and impartial observers could hardly begrudge the Hatfield Peverel side this satisfying end to a season of toil.
With no women players, the Swan could never field a pairs team in league matches; in effect, they always started two points down. But they saw it through to the end, and will deserve a cheer on presentation night, June 16.
Defeat was a letdown for the Retreat, who lost on their last final appearance, two years ago. They were brushed aside 7-2, the Swan’s Peter Livings and Colin French remaining unbeaten on the night.
Alan Bell and John Coxhead, who scored one of the losers’ two points, will hope for better things in Tuesday’s delayed pairs semi-final.
DOMINOES CUP – Final: Retreat 2, Swan 7 (Chequers).
