COLCHESTER Swimming Club's Alfie Francis was in fantastic form at the final round of the Essex ASA County Swimming Championships.

He finished off a great few weeks by setting the fastest-ever Essex boys' time in the 100 metres breaststroke event for the 13 years age group, with an effort of one minute and 15.27 seconds.

Francis struck gold in the event, held at Basildon Sporting Village.

In addition, he recently competed at the London Aquatic Centre’s Olympic pool.

In his first event, he secured gold in the 50m butterfly with a time of 30.19s, closely backed up with another gold in the 50m breaststroke, with a time of 35.01s.

Over the course of this year’s County Championships, which started on January 20, Francis has competed in 15 events, securing three golds (50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke), two silvers (200m individual medley team relay and 200m breaststroke) and three bronzes (100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m IM).

He was awarded pendants in five further events by finishing within the top eight in the 13 years age group (1,500m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 400m IM and 200m butterfly).

Francis trains six days a week at Colchester Leisure World and dreams of one day following in the footsteps of Olympic champion Adam Peaty.

He hopes to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth and 2024 Olympic Games.
