WRITTLE Wanderers endured a day to forget in their opening game of the Essex Premier League.
Wanderers were crushed by Ilford, who emerged 27-0 victors although the hosts did make a good start.
The home team were moving the ball well and making the bigger visiting side work hard in defence. But the pressure could not be turned into points, with poor decision-making costly on more than one occasion.
Ilford dotted down the first try of the game against the early run of play, and things went from bad to worse for Writtle.
Tom Fleming had to leave the field injured and Writtle’s problems continued to mount as returning replacement Gwyn Taylor picked up another injury.
Ilford took control of the game - using their big runners well and scoring another three tries to take the game away from the hosts.
Sid Wright and Dale Russell were strong runners in midfield but it was not enough for Writtle, whose next fixture is at King Cross.
