LEE Barnard scored a late penalty as Chelmsford City made it back-to-back wins at the start of the National League South season.
The former Southend United man netted the only goal of the game against Welling, climbing off the bench to good effect.
However, the Kent side offered an early threat – Bradley Goldberg coming close to the opener before Chris Dickson blasted off target up the other end.
It was an even game, with Barnard bringing an immediate save from Welling’s goalkeeper with a long-range stinging effort.
The decisive moment came eight minutes from time, Alfie Pavey bringing down Barnard in the area.
The striker picked himself up and powered the ball into the goal to hand the Clarets the points.
