KANE Haysman’s goal proved to be enough as Rod Stringer’s Vanarama National League South side beat Canvey Island at The Frost Financial Stadium.

Canvey had a goal disallowed - with Callum Ibe adjudged to be offside - but there was little in the opening 45 minutes.

Rod Stringer’s side continued to threaten in the opening throes of the second half, but neither Lee Barnard nor Shaun Batt could break the deadlock.

James Walker was left ruing his missed chance after watching his shot cleared off the line, following David Knight’s cut-back, when the ball was won in midfield by Haysman and the tricky winger drove forward before slotting past Conor Gough.

Chelmsford continue their pre-season preparations at Thurrock on Saturday afternoon.
