CHELMSFORD Amateur Boxing Club held a charity boxing event at Chelmsford City Football Club for the first time.

Not only did the local fight fans witness a tremendous evening of skilful boxing, they also raised around £1,000 for JS Hospice.

First to box was Regan Jackson Smith boxing in a skills non-decision contest versus Uma Khan from the City of London Boxing Club.

Chelmsford's newly-crowned Eastern Counties Schoolboy champion Forrest Whittlesey faced Patrick Casey from Finchley ABC.

This contest was very close through out but Whittlesey's cleaner boxing saw him win on a split judges' decision.

Taylor Jackson Smith (Chelmsford) faced Rab Usman (City of London) and won by a unanimous decision after using his skilful jab and combinations to see off Usman, who received a standing count in the first round.

Debutant Jordan Saunders faced Evan Cooper from Foley and secured his maiden win as right-left combinations proved too much for Cooper, resulting in the referee stopping the contest.

Louie O'Doherty faced the more experienced Zac Lawson from Halstead. O' Doherty had to fight a patient and controlled bout and was rewarded with a unanimous verdict.

Chelmsford's Matt Saunders earned a unanimous decision against Mark Kuderovich from Angel following a competitive bout.

Joel Couch had his first contest against Fajlur Rahman from City of London. The Chelmsford boxer tried to force the pace but a lapse in concetration saw him walk on to a punch and hit the canvas, with the referee stopping the contest.

Liam Hollaway was next against Ed Crohurst from Hillcrest. Crohurst boxed neatly to make it a tough fight for Hollaway, who lost to a unanimous decision.

Courtney Walcott was the last Chelmsford boxer up and faced Wasim Rach of Colchester. The bout was stopped following an accidental clash of heads, following new ABA rules. The score cards were totted up and Walcott got a unanimous verdict.

Trainer Dave Hubble was delighted as Chelmsford boxers won six of their eight bouts.

"Every boxer can hold their head up high, they did the club and themselves proud," he said.

"Each individual will have learnt something, which means we can go back to the gym and work on some techniques and tactics".

Dave Hull praised his debutants Jordan and Joel although different results on the night

"It is a tough sport and can be unforgiving at times; Joel will have learnt from tonight, Jordan was tremendous.

"The season will soon be over but I feel exciting times are coming next season."

Club president Grant Riley praised matchmaker Graham Park for organising fair and competitive contests which was widely recognised by the supporters. For any information about the club or future shows contact 07789 225501.
