CHELMSFORD will return to London One action on January 9 buoyed by a morale-boosting 36-24 home win over Luton.

The hosts scored five tries to ensure a bonus try-scoring point and director of coaching Eddie Gooby thought the result was a fitting tribute to his team.

“I am so pleased for the players they have worked so hard to put things right over the first part of the season,” Gooby said.

“This was a good way to finish the year and it allows us to be more positive for the remainder of the season.

“We always knew it was going to be a testing season and I believe this squad of players are learning and adapting to this league.

“We will always have some ups and downs throughout the season, but today we got a win that we fully deserved.”

The foundation of Chelmsford’s win was a great display from their pack, especially in the front row but with wins for both Barking and Letchworth, Chelmsford still remain in the bottom three in the table.

Chelmsford who took the lead in the 20th minute when flanker Seth Robinson broke away for a try that was converted by fly half Simon Hoult for 7-0 lead.

Luton replied with a converted try and penalty before Hoult’s penalty made it 10-10 at half-time.

Hoult converted a penalty try to make it 17-10 and Luton’s loose head prop was yellow-carded. The referee awarded a further penalty try after Luton were again in disarray in the scrum. Hoult converted to make it 24-10.

Dan Indundun caught Ben Bayley’s kick-ahead and score in the left corner to make it 29-10 lead before Luton’s converted try made it 29-17.

Robinson’s second try was converted by Hoult to make it 36-17 but the hosts finished the match with 14 men after Alex Ellis was yellow-carded.

Luton capitalised on the man advantage with a try to make the final score 36-24.

Chelmsford return to league action on Saturday, January 9, when they travel to Thurrock.
