CHELMSFORD take on bottom-of-the-table Luton on Saturday in their final London One North match of 2015.

Eddie Gooby’s team know they must get a win to draw away from the bottom clubs following last Saturday’s 26-21 defeat at Barking.

The match was seen as crucial with Chelmsford 11th and Barking 12th but the defeat meant the visitors slipped into the bottom three, ahead of Harrow and Luton.

Barking took advantage of the wind to lead 19-5 at the break after two tries and a conversion in the opening five minutes led to a 12-0 lead.

Gooby tightened things up by bringing on Seth Robinson and was rewarded when Dave Hyett scored an unconverted try but Barking scored another converted try.

Will Ferrier’s try, converted by Simon Hoult, made it 19-12 before Holt’s drop kick made it 19-15.

Hoult added a penalty to make it 19-18 but Chelmsford could not make their pressure tell.

That proved costly when Chelmsford fumbled high kick ahead and bagged a converted try.

Hoult kicked a penalty in the final action of the game to salvage a bonus point for the visitors.

“I thought we had resolved our starts to games over the past few weeks, but today the first 10 minutes killed us,” said Gooby.

“Conceding 19 points is hard for any team to come back from but that shows the character of this team.

“We got back to 19-18 and dominated the second half and we had a number of chances to win the game but just fell short at the last hurdle.

“What is a massive positive for me is that whilst we may not have won the last two games, we have started to pick up bonus points, something we were not doing at the beginning of the season.

“We are in a dog fight but we still have everything in our hands.”
