CHELMSFORD Chieftains are back on top of NIHL Division 1 South after a tough weekend of ice hockey.

On Saturday they travelled to the Milton Keynes Thunder where Chieftains netminder Euan King faced his brother Damien in the opposite net.

Chieftains did just enough on the night, scrapping home with 2-1 victory, courtesy of a Darren Brown double.

And Euan won the battle of the Kings, ending the game with a 96 per cent save average, with his brother on 94 per cent.

A bumper crowd turned up at Riverside on Sunday, including a large contingent from across the Dartford Crossing supporting the Invicta Dynamos.

Chieftains made a dream start with only 41 seconds on the game clock when Martin Piecha flicked the puck backhanded towards net and it beat netminder Mark Lee.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when a goal-mouth scramble was ended with James Ayling stabbing the puck over the line.

Penalties went both ways with both sides gaining powerplays and both failing to gain advantage. But the next goal was the pick of the night.

Chieftains fast-skating forward Matt Turner broke down the left and even with the close attention of a Dynamo’s defenceman managed to backhand the puck past Lee into the roof of the net.

The period ended 3-0 but Dynamos pulled a goal back within a minute of the restart. Ben Clements in the Chieftains net made three saves in quick succession, but Callum Fowler’s shot was one too many and it was 3-1.

The Dynamos continued to pressure but Danny Hammond goal made it 4-1. Ayling fired over before Fowler hit the post for the visitors.

The period ended 4-1 and made it 5-1 in the final period when Turner skated unmarked and scored.

Philips was again in the action soon after when after a tripping call on Ryan Giles he let his temper get the better of him and he was ejected from the game.

He stormed back to the changing room and after a lengthy delay the game restarted with Chieftains keeping focused and secured the 6-1 victory with a little over five minutes of the game remaining on the power play and Ayling scoring his second of the night.

The Chieftains face a double-header against Streatham Redskins. They travel to south London on Saturday and are at home on Sunday (6.30pm face-off).
