ESSEX Cricket's assistant coach Matt Walker is leaving the club to join Kent.

The 40-year-old will take up a coaching he held at the Ford County Ground with the team based in Canterbury.

Having joined Essex as a player from Kent in 2009, the left-handed batsman went onto become the assistant head coach with the Eagles two years later under Paul Grayson.

After announcing his departure, Walker thanked everyone involved at the club.

"When I came as a player, everyone has made me feel extremely welcome, for which I’m grateful," he said.

“I would especially like to thank Paul [Grayson] for giving me the opportunity as a player and obviously as a coach.

"He put his faith in me as a coach and I am eternally grateful for that opportunity."

Former England test player Chris Silverwood will step into the role left by Walker.
