A LAW student from Chelmsford’s Anglia Ruskin University has won his sixth national judo gold medal.

Matt Kavanagh came first in the under 81kg category at the British Junior Championships in Sheffield.

The second year law student was the number one seed for the tournament with five UK titles already behind him.

He was able to win gold in relative ease beating his first two opponents in a combined time of just 32 seconds and his longest bout lasted two minutes 42 seconds.

Winning means the student who was given a sports scholarship by the university has been selected for the 2014 England Junior Judo squad, but he admitted he already has his eyes set for Rio 2016.

“Results such as this open up fantastic opportunities to fight the best judokas from around the world in some of the toughest competitions,” he said.

“The experience I am getting is bringing me a step closer to achieving my dream of making the Olympic Games in 2016.”
