Cricketers beat Woodford to claim title
12:19pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
CHELMSFORD Cricket Club entered the weekend in the unusual position of hoping the weather would be good enough to enable them to play at South Woodford.
A good victory there would take the league leadership from the hosts and give Chelmsford the Spa-Tec Essex Sunday League title.
The weather just about held good and the performance was solid with Nisarg Patel and Nick Bailey batting very well to complete the win. Captain Rob Hayto had taken three wickets in South Woodford’s 164 for eight.
That was a reasonable score on a pitch that made strokeplay difficult but Chelmsford made a good job of the chase, winning with nearly eight overs and seven wickets in hand.
This is the fifth time Chelmsford have won the title and extends the period in which Chelmsford have won a league title to eight seasons.
That was one of two scheduled matches for the weekend but the friendly away to Bentley on Saturday was unsurprisingly cancelled after some dreadful weather on Friday night.
Friday had been the Colt’s Presentation Evening. B radley Green was awarded the prestigious Colt of the Year award after performing very well in the Matchplay competition.
James Clifford’s incredible double century at Wickford was rewarded with the Stan Doe Trophy.
Jamie Matthews won Most Improved Player and Tom Blaker the Clubman of the Year.
The only Chelmsford colts team to win anything in 2013 were the under-11s and this squad picked up the medals for winning their league.
