A WEDDING venue’s bid to change the use of a home on the site to create guest accommodation has been recommended for approval.

Osea Leisure, which bought Vaulty Manor in Goldhanger, last year, has submitted a planning application to Maldon District Council to change the use of the house on the site to a hotel.

It will require minor interior alterations to the first floor of the Grade II listed house to improve bedroom and ensuite facilities.

In its early life, Vaulty Manor became the property of Beeleigh Abbey in Maldon, donated in 1186 by Rober t Mantel, Lord of Little Maldon and the founder of the abbey.

The dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII’s rule saw an end to Beeleigh’s ownership, and he gave Vaulty Manor to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk in 1536.

The council’s planning officers have now recommend the plans for approval.

A report, which will go before the north western area planning committee, said: “In this instance, the benefits of the proposal are considered to outweigh the minor harm caused by the loss of a six bedroom dwelling in the district.”

The planning committee will decide on the plans on Monday.
