Teenager found dead in Chelmsford prison

A TEENAGER is believed to have been found hanged in his prison cell.
Police were called to Chelmsford Prison, Springfield Road, at 8pm on Monday.
A man was taken to Broomfield Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: “The death is not being treated as suspicious and the file has been passed to the coroner’s office.”

"On the night of his death, one prison officer was responsible for 126 prisoners on E wing, having already worked all day. The inquest heard there was no handover and the officer had no time to read the comments in Mr Gregory’s record, which said he was desperate and in need of support.
It also found there was a lack of essential equipment to deal with a medical emergency.
A prison nurse said no defibrillator was taken to Mr Gregory’s cell when he was found hanging because it was cumbersome, old and did not work very well."
If that is the way Chelmsford prison is run, no wonder there is a suicide there on average every two months.

Grossly inadequate equipment and staff levels. And then, for each suicide, a statement reeking of complacency. They are not taking the problem seriously at all.
