THE way has been paved for a leading store to come to Chelmsford.
But retail bosses are remaining tight lipped on who it will be.
Planning approval has been given for a three-storey side extension at the High Chelmer shopping centre, to accommodate a new tenant that wants extra space on two floors.
The development will also include a new entrance and shopfront along Bellmead.
Roy Whitehead, leader of Chelmsford Council, which owns the freehold of the centre, said the right tenant would increase demand for units in the centre.
He added: βIt will be of benefit to Chelmsford and those who come here.β
CIN Properties, which runs the centre, has asked the council for a contribution to the cost of adapting and extending the centre to attract the new tenant.
The council has agreed to meet half the cost.
