Drink drive message highlighted

A DON’T drink and drive campaign has been launched in Chelmsford, using screens to show revellers the dangers of getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

Throughout the summer the Essex Casualty Reduction Board will be running a summer drink drive campaign in Chelmsford and across the county.

A central and novel part of the Chelmsford campaign will be Street Screens – mobile media screens playing short films about the dangers of drink driving.

They have already been out and about in the evenings in Chelmsford town centre.

PC Alex Doyle, neighbourhood specialist officer for Chelmsford Town, said: “The Street Screens are striking and attracted a lot of attention from members of the public.

“It’s a great way of getting an important message out to the public and we’re delighted to be part of this summer campaign seeking to eradicate drink driving.”

Inspector Jo Byrne, of Chelmsford police, said: “There is nothing cool about drinking and driving.

“A person who drinks alcohol and then gets behind a steering wheel is putting themselves and members of the public at risk of serious injury, or even death.

“If you see someone drinking and driving, call 999 and let Essex Police know.

“Let’s get drink drivers off our streets for good."

Kathy Payne, senior road safety officer for Essex County Council, said “With the beautiful weather we have been experiencing lately, it’s easy to visit a family barbecue, have a couple of drinks and then drive home.

“We are reminding members of the public there is no safe limit. If you’re going to drink, leave the car at home.”
