A CEREMONY to honour the armed forces has taken place in Chelmsford.
Ahead of British Armed Forces and Veterans Weekend at Hylands House at the weekend a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flag is flying until Monday June 29.
Local authorities across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man raised specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flags in unison on Monday in a universal display of support, honouring Britain’s Armed Forces, past, present and future.
In Chelmsford, the flag was raised on Chelmsford Council’s flag pole at the Civic Centre.
Mayor Tony Sach and councillors were joined by representatives from the Royal British Legion, Essex Yeomanry and Royal Anglians at the ceremony, along with members of the Combined Cadet Force and Drum Corps from the King Edward Vith Grammar School.
Mr Sach said: “I am proud that Chelmsford is one of over 450 councils who will be raising the flag as part of the celebrations to honour Britain’s Armed forces present, past and future.
“This ceremony of raising the flag marks the start of a week of events which culminate in Chelmsford in the Veterans and Armed Forces weekend at Hylands Park this Saturday and Sunday.”
He added: “It is important that the armed forces and the veterans are shown support and gratitude for what they achieve on their missions without regard to how or why they are there.
The flag will fly until Monday 29 June.
