The A12 has reopened completely near Kelvedon after a lorry struck a bridge.
It hit the bridge at Ewell Hall Chase, Kelvedon, on the bypass, at about 8.50am.
It is believed the lorry was carrying a tractor.
There are still queues back to Witham South and through Kelvedon High Street in both directions and on the B1023 Inworth Road heading towards Kelvedon.
The road had also been shut southbound at Marks Tey, but was later re-opened.
No-one was injured in the crash.
An Essex Police spokesman said the road was closed because of damage to the bridge.
She added: "This has been reported to the Highways Agency.
"A structural engineer has been called to assess the damage."
