Essex police could lose employment protection

ESSEX police officers could be made redundant under new proposals.

Previously officers could not be made redundant for budgetary reasons in exchange for them giving up the right to strike, working unsociable hours at short notice and giving up other rights enjoyed by other professions.

However the Winsor report part two which examined police pay and conditions and was published yesterday has recommended this protection is withdrawn.

That'll ruffle a few feathers in the police camp, first public sector pensions and now unprotected jobs what ever next......

They will be queuing up after leaving a 3 year degree course at university.

It makes sense get a degree earn £2000 less than a constable currently gets paid on starting work night work, weekends get spat at abused, sworn at, vomited on, kicked, punched, lose you human rights by not being allowed to talk about or going on strike, be restricted from expressing a political or religious view point, plus many more restrictions.
Sounds a really good career to me.

Well, there we have it. One man recommends it, insists on fast tracking senior ranks from outside the force, so promotion prospects will be gone and men who are the police equivalent of our investment bankers will take over. But front line police will be safe. No doubt they will attract top pay (rightly) and will be uber-police. Roughly the equivalent of the SPG. Why ever did we allow Thatcher's love child in to continue what she started? AND the private police force for the gated gentry moves closer and closer. God help us all! They destroyed the family where the lad nicked a bottle of Evian, chucking the whole family out of their house without trial (The family had not done anything wrong) whilst these evil ne'er do wells have only to say sorry when they are caught with their hands in the till, to be let off. Does anyone still believe that life is going to move forward for the common people of England?

See no reason why the police should be exempt from the risk of losing their jobs, due to budget cuts. They are not a "special case" and its no different for them who should face redundancy if the need arises, just like anyone else has to.

If being in the police is as bad as Brunning999 says then, just like everyone else, they have a choice...there's the door!

Why not get out and leave of your own accord and join the ranks of the millions of others who haven't got the job protection and gold plated pension provided to the police. Most won't cos they know they are onto a good thing!

If they take away one side of an agreement then the other side is no longer in effect, that means the Police would then be able to strike. This Government is riding roughshod over all of our liberties and this stupid population just put up with it. Wait till we have no effective police force or freely available nhs and gp's. It won't be more than 2years before this becomes reality.

They are a "special case" as they do not have the right to strike.

The govt do not care about strikes, regardless of the morality of the argument, because the public do not support them.

The only person who has made strike threats work is Bob Crowe. Every other union is toothless and irrelevant.

The govt will argue the police are striking and putting safety at risk to stop the govt managing staff effectively. Who would support them then?
