THE police investigation into the former Essex Police Authority chairman’s expenses has ended and no further action will be taken.

An internal investigation into undisclosed members or former members of the authority will continue, it has been confirmed.

Robert Chambers left the authority in February and announced his intention to stand as the county’s first directly elected police commissioner. Auditors uncovered potential overpayments and a file was passed to the Metropolitan Police. Mr Chambers is understood to have since paid back more than £1,500 in mileage claims.

A statement by the authority said: “The authority acknowledges the Metropolitan Police is taking no further action. However, the authority has not concluded its own investigation.”
