Bobby Hunt will be an independent candidate for St Andrew’s

First published in News by

COLCHESTER United legend Bobby Hunt is to stand in the Colchester Council elections in a protest over the closure of sheltered housing.

Mr Hunt, 69, is a resident of the under-threat Joyce Brooks House sheltered housing complex in Oxford Road, Colchester.

He will stand as an independent in St Andrew’s ward against cabinet member, Labour’s Tina Dopson, on May 3.

Mr Hunt, who has spoken out against the council’s decision to sell the home, said: “I want to make a stand.

“I have never been involved in politics before, but I think the experience of how we have been treated over the past seven months has been diabolical.

“It has made me determined to do something to make sure this doesn’t happen to people again.

“I am quite serious about this. It isn’t just a gesture.”

Mr Hunt, who holds the record for the most goals scored in a football league season for the U’s with 39, is one of 11 residents left in Joyce Brooks House.

Nine of them are being represented by solicitor Yvonne Hossacks and have said they will fight to the end.

The residents say their friendships are more important than mod cons, and they want to stay together.

Colchester Council claims the home and Abbeygate House at St John’s Green, Colchester, are no longer suitable and are selling both to raise £1.6million.

The money raised will be put towards updating other sheltered housing in the borough.

Mrs Dopson said she was glad Mr Hunt would be standing in the election.

She said: “Having an independent councillor gives people more choice.

“Our democracy makes that possible.”

Mrs Dopson, a ward councillor for eight years and a former pupil at Sir Charles Lucas and St Andrew’s Junior schools, said: "My roots are there and the people of St Andrew’s are the ones I have most connection with.

“I am proud of Greenstead and how it has improved so much recently.”

Mrs Dopson has served as the councillor responsible for communities and has courted controversy with her move to close Abbot’s Activity Centre.

She said the council could not afford to subsidise the centre to the tune of £76,000 a year.

Following an outcry, the council asked for companies or charities to take it over and social housing provider Colne Housing has come forward to keep the centre open.

Other candidates for the ward are due to be confirmed on Tuesday.

I expect this will have the local Labour Party absolutely terrified. And rightly so. Anybody who's followed this story knows the council are talking nonsense - this is all about money. And it's not just Joyce Brooks & Abbeygate, the council are now looking to close a further five schemes - it's a privatisation through stealth. All the very best, Bobby.

May i take this opportunity on behalf of Northampton Res4Res to wish Bobby the very best of not luck but conscience and he has that in abundance. This is far from a one issue subject, it is multi-issue, and Bobby will without doubt serve all well. It is the three main parties who will need all the luck as they are bereft of a conscience when it comes to our vulnerable elderly and disabled. Bobby will score a hat-trick by knocking the opposition of the cross-bar where they perch. Bobby you have cheered the residents here in Northampton by standing and ive no doubt all the vulnerable elderly and disabled everywhere.

Great to see support from Northampton. Bobby was of course a big money signing from the U's (after all those goals) for Northampton, where he played in the old Division 1, scoring against the ManU of Best, Charlton, Law and Stiles. Can't imagine today's Premier League stars ever going through something like this in the future. This seems to say something to me...

Unfortunately, nominations have now closed, so if anyone else wants to follow Bobby's example they will be too late.
But in all wards there will also be a Green candidate. They don't amount to much, but at least they are not guilty of all the ill deeds of the present and previous administrations. They are mostly nice people, so they may be worth your vote if you aren't in St Andrew's ward.

Perhaps 'it's not going to happen', but I'm sure Bobby will do very well, and give Dopson a real run for her money. It is already obvious that Young et al are terrified.

If Mrs Dopson is so proud of Greenstead why does she live in Gosbecks Road and not in our area. I think that if a councillor is going to represent an area they should live in that area. Tim and Julie Young who represent our area moved from Stanway to a road within St Andrew's ward, why cannot Mrs Dopson do the same.

Good on him, and I wish him the best of luck! There are far too many armchair political commentators around, all too happy to complain and whine, but not willing to get involved properly. I think it's brilliant when local people want to get involved with local issues which really mean something to them, it's how it should be.

I really, desperately hope his attitude rubs off on my generation, but I won't hold my breath.

Go for it Bobby!

You and the guys lit up Long Wyre Street recently with your passion and good humour.

If anyone can win over public support in this town it is Bobby Hunt - one of the all time greats of Layer Road and much loved by anyone who has the good fortune to know him.

If there is anyone with a greater sense of humour inside or outside our Roman walls I am yet to meet him ( or her ).

It's clear and unanimous support for local hero Bobby. I wish him well. I wish any independent candidate well. We need more independents who can give an honest view rather than be told by his/her party what their view is. But the reason for all this should not be forgotten. The council has done what it has done because of the dire state of our finances. Why does it make such a big thing out of capping council tax? We, as an electorate, should be paying more to ensure that our services are not cut like this. Our old folk deserve more respect but, to do so, we need the money to be able to do it. If the council are in the wrong it is because of their stubborn belief in capping council tax.

Good for Bobby! The residential home in question occupies a valuable building in property terms. The same goes for the present Colchester Archaeological Trust building, which it is due to move out of. But that is not occupied as residential home. These decisions are about finance, not about people. Good also to see the Green Party is not fielding a candidate in the same patch. Present local decision makers seem to be completely out of touch with the voters.
