Colchester Cat Rescue founder Sheila dies

Sheila Parsonson Sheila Parsonson

THE woman who founded Colchester Cat Rescue more than 30 years ago has died, aged 84.

Sheila Parsonson passed away peacefully in Welshwood Manor nursing home, Colchester.

She started to rescue cats and look after them in her own home while living and working in London.

After taking early retirement, she moved to Great Tey in the early Seventies, where she began to rescue and rehome cats.

In 1978, she officially formed the Colchester and District Cat Rescue & Homing Society with the Charities Commission.

By the Nineties the charity had outgrown her Great Tey home, so a fundraising campaign by fellow trustee George Charles helped her to buy a derelict house in Bromley Road, Colchester.

The new sanctuary provided a home for hundreds of pets in the past 15 years, including many that could not be rehomed and lived out their lives there.

Sheila’s fellow trustees described her as a committed woman who would not let cats be put to sleep unless the vet said their quality of life was being affected.

In November 2002, she was recognised for her work by being appointed the MBE for services to animal welfare by the Queen.

At the time, she said: “You have to tick a box saying if you accept it or not.

“I thought it would be churlish not to.”

By 2004, Sheila’s health had worsened to the point where she could not take an active role in the charity.

The remaining trustees then took over the running of the rescue and kept it operating as an independent charity, as was Sheila’s wish.

Both the Bromley Road sanctuary and a charity shop in Eld Lane continue to run in her memory.

The funeral will take place at Colchester Crematorium on March 7. Donations can be made to Colchester Cat Rescue, Lyndhurst, Bromley Road, Colchester, CO7 7SF.

Sad news for cat lovers. We got our first cat from CCR when it was at Great Tey - it was an amazing place. Every spare perching place had a cat (or two) on it! RIP Sheila.

Yes, I remember going there too, in the 1970s, when our cat was lost, to check if she had been taken in there - and she had. You could smell the cats from outside the house. But the lady, she must have been Sheila, was very kindly, so I gave her what I hoped was a decent donation.
It's good to know that CCR is well staffed to carry on.

I and many others in my family have, over the years, obtained many well cared for cats from Sheila Parsonson. She was totally dedicated to her cats and their welfare. I have never met anyone quite so dedicated to what she did, caring for the cats. My children now have cats that are the offspring of the original cat/s we got back in the 90s. I also remember the house at Great Tey when my parents went there in search of a kitten in the 70s. Her legacy will be that she established a caring agency that has love and care for cats at the very heart of its existence. I and many others are indebted to the service Sheila so kindly performed for many cats and her memory and endeavours will hopefully last for many years to come. May her team continue the good cause into the future as a long-lasting tribute to her.

Sheila Parsonson was a gentle lady with a big heart.

We first got to know her when we moved to Essex from the North East 26years ago. She was then at Great Tey. She has worked so hard and has always had a dedicated band of helpers. At times she must have suffered a lot of stress seeing the shocking state of some cats 'rescued'.
Year after year she continued and yet always made time to give advice when needed.

We have a lot to thank Sheila for and she will be sadly missed by a lot of us.
