A MASSIVE operation to clear an illegal waste tip in Jaywick has been launched by council enforcers.

The unofficial dumping ground on private land in the Brooklands estate sparked a series of complaints after becoming an eyesore.

Now Tendring Council has sent in contractors to clear the site.

The scale of the tip means the operation could take up to four days.

Council environment boss Michael Talbot said organising the clean-up had been a long process, but it was important the authority did things properly.

“While allowing the build-up of such waste is illegal, the council must act in accordance with the law, which can sometimes take longer than people would like,” he said.

“We have liaised with the Environment Agency to ensure our plans for removal of the waste meet regulations, and as a local authority we have worked with contractors to deal with this complex site to ensure the work is undertaken in such a way that the council receives good value for money.

"I am delighted that we are now in a position to begin these works and improve the quality of life of residents in the area.”

The plot will be secured to prevent further fly-tipping on the land.

Mr Talbot said: “Clearing up such sites can be an expensive process, and where possible we will be looking to recover the cost from those responsible, rather than from the taxpayer.”

Councillor Paul Honeywood, who has special responsibility for Jaywick, said the clean-up operation was part of the council’s commitment to regenerate the area.

He said: “The irresponsible behaviour of a few people is not going to detract from the commitment to make change happen.”
