The Tesco Homeplus store in Chelmsford will close its doors on Sunday.

The store, in Parkway near the Army and Navy roundabout, is one of 43 "unprofitable" stores that were planned for closure in January.

At the time of the announcement the store employed 78 people but the company was unable to confirm today if employees had been found positions at alternative stores or if redundancies may still be in the pipeline as a consultation process is still on-going.

A Tesco spokesman said: “It is with great sadness that we will be closing our Chelmsford Homeplus store on Sunday.

"The decision to close the store was exceptionally difficult to take and we recognise that it will affect many hard working colleagues, our customers and the local community.

"We would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in the store and we will continue to serve them through our other local stores and our dotcom service.”
