ESSEX County Council is introducing plans to increase the transparency of the work and decisions of its cabinet.

From the cabinet meeting in September all county councillors will be able to ask questions regarding any of the items on the agenda.

Until now, only the leader of the opposition and his deputy have been able to ask questions at cabinet meetings.

The move is also designed to increase participation and engagement at cabinet meetings.

Peter Martin, leader of the council, said: “To ensure we are able to continue providing effective and efficient first class services for our residents it is important that every member has the opportunity of getting involved.

“These changes will now allow all members to ask questions on any item that is on the agenda.”
