CD helps boost Fairtrade campaign

A COLLABORATION between a local supermarket and a talent show has led to the release of a charity CD promoting Fairtrade events.

Local Co-operative Society, Chelmsford Star, recently held a Fairtrade event in its Quadrant department store in support of Fairtrade Fortnight on February 23.

The annual event included a Fairtrade cookery demonstration by QVC chef Malcolm Harradine, a Fairtrade wine tasting and the premier of a Fairtrade song.

The Society has been for some years, linked to the Springfield Parish Council through its Star Talents Awards.

This has resulted in collaboration between a former winner, and student at the Brit School, Robert Jerome and last year's winner Naomi Wiley to write and perform a Fairtrade song.

Vanessa Howard, marketing & PR manager, said: “Many people buy Fairtrade but don’t really know what it is all about, so we hope that by listening to the words of this catchy song, they will understand and support a little bit more.

Robert, who runs his own recording studio, has recorded the song and it has been produced on to a CD now available from selected branches of Chelmsford Star Co-op, costing £3.

The Co-operative radio, which is played in Co-operative grocery stores across the UK, played the song during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Over £550 was raised on the night from entrance fees and a Fairtrade Hamper raffle which was donated to the Society’s charity of the year, Little Havens Children’s Hospice in Thundersley.
